Gel vs. Regular Polish: Which Is Better for Your Nails?

“Angely, should I get gel or regular?” I answer this question every day, and the truth is: there's no single right answer — only the right answer for you. Let me give you the honest version.

Gel polish: the long-lasting favorite

Gel is cured under LED light, so it dries instantly and stays glossy and chip-free for two to three weeks. If you want durability and shine that survives a busy life, gel is wonderful.

  • Pros: Long-lasting, high-shine, no smudging, no drying time.
  • Things to know: Needs proper removal — never peel it off, as that damages the nail.

Regular polish: the breathable classic

Regular lacquer is gentle, removes in seconds with remover, and lets you change colors on a whim. It won't last as long, but it's lovely for special occasions or when your nails want a break.

  • Pros: Easy to remove, kind to the nail, endlessly changeable.
  • Things to know: Chips sooner and needs drying time.

So which should you choose?

If your days are full and you want set-it-and-forget-it polish, go gel. If you love switching colors often or want a softer option, regular is perfect. Many of my clients alternate — gel for everyday, a regular-polish break in between.

The real secret

Honestly? Either is healthy for your nails as long as it's applied and removed properly. The damage people blame on gel almost always comes from peeling it off at home. Whichever you choose, let a professional remove it gently. You can book either with us any time.
