Living here in Ontario, I watch it happen every year: the temperature drops, the heaters come on, and suddenly everyone's nails are peeling and snapping. I'm Angely, and winter nail care is close to my heart, because cold, dry air is a nail's biggest seasonal challenge.
Why winter is so hard on nails
Cold air outside and dry, heated air inside pull moisture straight out of your nails and the skin around them. Add hot showers and frequent hand-washing, and nails become brittle fast.
Hydrate more than you think you need to
In winter, double down on moisture:
- Cuticle oil morning and night, not just once a day.
- A thick hand cream you actually enjoy using — keep one by every sink.
- An overnight treatment: cream plus cotton gloves while you sleep, once a week.
Protect your hands from the elements
Wear gloves outside — truly, every time. Cold wind is harsh on nails and skin, and warm mittens are the simplest protection there is.
Mind the hot water
I know a hot shower feels heavenly in January, but very hot water dehydrates nails. Keep it warm rather than scalding, and always moisturize the moment you step out.
Keep your length sensible
Winter is a lovely time to keep nails a touch shorter and rounded — there's simply less to catch and snap. Come spring, you can grow them out from a strong, healthy base.
Treat your nails tenderly through the cold months and they'll come out the other side happy and whole. Stay warm out there.
