Peeling nails drive my clients a little crazy, and I understand completely — just as they start to grow, the tips flake away in thin layers. I'm Angely, and I want to reassure you: this is one of the most fixable nail problems there is.
What peeling really is
Your nail is made of many thin layers pressed together. When those layers separate at the tip, you get peeling. It's almost always a sign of one thing: dryness, or damage from how the nail is being treated.
The most common causes
- Too much water exposure (dishes, swimming, long baths).
- Harsh removers or acetone used too often.
- Filing in a back-and-forth sawing motion.
- Peeling off gel polish — the biggest culprit of all.
- Simple lack of moisture.
How to fix it
The plan is gentle and consistent. Stop anything that's tearing at the layers, then flood your nails with moisture: cuticle oil nightly and hand cream throughout the day. File in one direction only, and wear gloves for chores.
Give it time
Here's the part that requires patience: the peeling tips you have now are already damaged and will grow out over a couple of months. What you're really doing is making sure the new growth comes in healthy and intact. Don't be discouraged — look at the base of your nails for proof it's working.
If you'd like a professional to shape and seal your peeling nails while they recover, a gentle manicure does wonders. We're always happy to help you get back to strong, smooth tips.
