Clients often point to the little lines running along their nails and ask, with a worried look, “Is something wrong?” I'm Angely, and almost always, the answer is a reassuring no. Let's gently demystify nail ridges.
Vertical ridges
These run from your cuticle to the tip, like fine grooves. They're extremely common and usually just a natural part of getting older — a bit like fine lines on skin. They're nothing to worry about.
Horizontal ridges
Ridges that run across the nail are less common. They can appear after illness, stress, or a knock to the nail, as growth briefly paused. They grow out on their own, though a deep, persistent one is worth mentioning to a doctor.
How to care for ridged nails
- Hydrate: cuticle oil keeps nails flexible and healthy as they grow.
- Buff gently: a light buffing block softens the look of vertical ridges — but don't overdo it, as thinning the nail isn't the goal.
- Use a ridge-filling base coat: these smooth the surface beautifully before polish.
What not to do
Please don't aggressively file ridges away — that thins and weakens the nail. Gentle care and good moisture do far more than force ever could.
When to check in
Most ridges are purely cosmetic. But if you notice sudden, dramatic changes, dark lines, or ridges with pain or discoloration, it's worth seeing a doctor for peace of mind.
For everyday vertical ridges, relax — they're simply part of being human. A little oil and a smoothing base coat keep your nails looking lovely.
